If you’ve never made salt dough with your kids, you’re missing something, it’s always been a great moment of fun, Kids Drawing, and that goes for kids and adults! The beauty of salt dough is that you don’t have to make much; follow the ratio of 1 part salt, two parts flour, and 1 part water. If you want to make a large batch, use a large reference container, such as a cup.
You will then have plenty of dough to make various ornaments, pendants, magnets, or bowls. If you only want to make a few items, use a spoon instead of a cup!
Ingredients
A salt, flour, water, acrylic paint (black, white, pink, green, orange, and red), brush, toothpick, six small twigs, felt or cloth, small pomfret, and ribbon.
Here’s how to make this salt dough snow family
Preheat your oven to 120 °. Mix 1/2 cup salt, 1 cup flour, and 1/2 cup water until a smooth paste is formed. Knead the dough on a floured surface until the dough becomes elastic and smooth. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle with flour until the sticky properties disappear. Just be careful not to add too much flour; it will dry out the dough and cause it to crack before you have a chance to bake it.
Salt dough is inedible, but it will not harm your children; it will not be tasty! Roll the dough in your hands to form balls of different sizes (you need 9 in all, three for each snowman).
Make three snowmen out of balls by crushing each ball a little, then line it up on a baking sheet. For each snowman, moisten between the balls with your wet fingers before placing them on top of each other (this will help the balls stick together, it’s a bit like salt dough glue).
Use permanent markers or paint to color the toothpicks orange. Then break it in half. Insert a piece of orange toothpick into each snowman’s head to make a carrot nose. Insert twigs for arms into each snowman. Do both of these steps BEFORE cooking.
Bake the snowman in the oven for about 2h00 to 2h30 (check the cooking regularly to ensure no cracks: lower the oven slightly instead). Remove them from the oven and let each snow salt dough cool. For best results, let cool overnight or at least 4 hours.
Paint the three snowmen with white paint, and let them dry well. Then paint colored buttons on each front of the man (green on one, red on the other, and orange on the third).
Use a small brush to repeat this method to add eyes and mouth with black paint. Alternatively, you can use a black permanent marker.
Decorate your snow family by shaping a hood and hat out of scrap fabric or cloth, and add a pom-pom hood on top of the hat. Add a bow with ribbon and make an earplug with a small piece of gold ribbon and a small pom-pom lid (like the picture above). Use photos as a guide.
