Other studies have shown that about 85 per cent of a child’s brain is developed by the age of three. And preschoolers with actively involved parents have more vital verbal skills (a must for all parents!). So it’s incredibly fair to say that parents, whether married or single, play a crucial role in developing a child’s brain and overall academic success.
Make Time Count for Children
As a noncustodial parent, I know how quickly our parenting time can fly by. I also realize how valuable that time is, but that should never be an excuse to waste our time when it comes to investing in our children’s academic future. Use that time wisely. Do homework first or take advantage of the excellent opportunity to spend quality time. With dad through age-appropriate reading, puzzles, and activities.
If you are the primary caregiver, I am sure you are comfortable with a homework schedule. If you do not have one in place, it is your responsibility to establish one. For noncustodial parents, I’ve found that games like Hangman (or other learning games) are a great way to pass the parent-child time while stimulating your child’s brain activity.
Over the summer, 15 minutes a day of reading and problem solving. Will help keep their minds busy so they can hit the ground running next school year. Over the past few years, I have attached a financial reward system based on how well my daughter does on each test I create ($1 for 10 out of 10; 75 cents for 8-9 correct, etc. No matter what method or route you choose to drink, be sure to fulfil your God-given parenting duties and do your homework first before playtime. By all means, use wisdom and discernment and don’t become legalistic.
Why bother?
Being a single parent is already challenging and maybe even a little confusing at times (that may be an understatement). So why, as single parents, should we participate in school activities, especially if they can eat up some of the already minimal time we spend with our children?But if serving Jehovah does not seem desirable to you, choose today whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah.
Serving the Lord involves both the natural and supernatural areas of life. Our circumstances may not be perfect, and although there may be a break from a previous relationship with Mom, our dedication to God and our children must remain constant. Failure on our part to help prepare our children academically leaves us off the mark as their primary life leaders. As the statistics above indicate, our participation now goes beyond good ratings. Children with active fathers perform better in almost all social and emotional areas. Our current efforts will only reap long-term benefits and prepare them to be strong, confident and prosperous. Adults who can stand firm when life’s storms come. Of course, we can only give what we have, making our relationship with Christ and consistency in our lives that much more imperative.

I understand that many moms reading this may not have a choice about dad’s involvement in their son or daughter’s life. My core actually goes out to you, and I exhort you to stay encouraged. Just know that many schools may already have tutoring programs for at-risk students or those who need extra help. I can tell you about one particular program here in Michigan: When a student has a mentor, grades and attendance go up, and negative factors like in-school suspensions go down. That’s only after spending an hour a week with his mentor!
