How to make your own Instagram highlight covers (+ 15 examples)

This article will walk you through all the steps and give comprar seguidores twitter you some tips to make it a success. We also provide some inspiration, including simple icons and stock photos.

How to create Instagram highlight covers

. It’s not the only tool you have, but it is our favorite. It is easy to use and offers many free templates and elements you can add. Here’s how:

Step 1: Open Canva’s website and create an account.

Step 2: Select Instagram Stories and open Templates. You’ll notice a tab called Highlight Cover at the top. Clicking on this tab will take you to over 1,000 templates you can customize. You can also type Instagram Story Highlight Cover in the search bar at the top.

Step 3: Choose one of the prebuilt templates and click on Customize.

Step 4: Once you’ve clicked the Edit button, you will be taken to the editing page. You can now add many elements, including icons, photos, graphics, and text and video.

Uploading your images is also possible from your smartphone. If you are looking for custom icons to cover your pages, Icon finder is a great tool.

If you intend to use the icon for an Instagram business account, you must ensure that the license allows you to exploit it commercially.

Step 5: Once you have customized your cover with different elements, click the Download button in the upper right corner.

Add Your Highlight Cover

Once you have created your cover for Instagram Highlights, it is time to add it to your actual content. Here’s how:

Step 1: Log in to your Instagram account

Step 2: Select the Instagram Highlight from which you want to create the custom cover. Click on the icon with three dots and choose Edit Highlight.

Step 3: Click Edit Cover to upload your newly created cover. It is vital to ensure that the surface is centered. You might need to adjust the scale and adjust it with your fingers.

Step 4: Give your followers a name to describe what to expect when they click on the highlight. It should look almost identical to the menus at the top of the websites.

15 Effective Instagram Highlight Covers

Here are some examples of covers that other brands have used if you need more inspiration beyond the ones provided by Canva’s templates.

  1. Dribbble

Dribbble uses gradients to help create consistency. Dribbble has also taken the time and rename their highlights to make them more concise but still specific.

  1. Canva

One of our favorite examples is Canva’s use of highlight covers. They had to deliver, considering they are the most popular tool for customizing Instagram Highlight Covers (and the one we chose to feature).

They communicate how much fun their software is by using playful icons. Although it is pretty colorful, the brand still managed to establish a consistent brand identity by using a solid background.

  1. MKT Heights

MKT Heights used a similar approach as Canva. The MKT Heights team also chose a variety of solid background colors and an icon. They have done something different, or at least more clearly, by making sure that the icon matches the name of the highlight. Although some may find this approach boring, users must know what to expect from clicking on a particular link.

  1. The Jungalow

The Jungalow has mastered the art of combining icons with background colors. Although each cover is unique, Jungalow’s iconic green color on every outside makes it easy to recognize their brand.

  1. Bedance

This Instagram feature is used mainly by Bedance to show off the work of their creative community. The creator’s photo is used along with the name to help create a consistent look. It is simple, but it works.

  1. Jenney

We love the creative use of color on JC Penney’s highlight cover covers. Each cover features a red element. This is an excellent way of linking the bodies together and back to your branding. This is especially helpful if you have a brand identity that includes bright colors such as red, which can easily overwhelm your followers.

  1. Beauty Counter

Beauty Counter shows that your cover art doesn’t need to be colorful to stand out. They’ve decided to stick with black and show that classic colors can work well.

  1. YSL Beauty

YSL Beauty, like Beauty Counter, shows how cleverly using black and white can create striking effects. The white lines almost seem to glow like neon signs, which we love.

  1. K12

We have included K12 in our list of examples because of their innovative use of icons. K12’s Success Stories icon is a unique but obvious example. Often, brands tend to stick with the same icons. But K12 shows that this is not always the case.

  1. Good Lines

Your Instagram Highlights covers must be consistent with your brand. If you are more formal than Good Lines, it might be challenging to create a fun icon.

They were aware that breasts and other body parts come in many shapes and sizes, so they used that information. Each icon is unique, but they were able to unite using the same background color.

  1. Attitude

Attitude’s highlight cover is very similar to Good Lines. Attitude chose to be more minimalistic, while Good Lines went for something more whimsical. They decided to use the same background color as Good Lines for all their colors, making it easy to identify the brand.

  1. Nickelodeon

You might find it easier depending on what your brand is like with Nickelodeon. Using the logos from their shows was more manageable than creating cover photos. You can use a similar approach to highlight different brands from your product range. There’s no need for the wheel to be redesigned. If Nickelodeon had chosen to use something other than these logos, it would have likely confused their fans.

  1. The Vitality Vet

We recommend icons over text. However, text can still be used in your cover image. Text can be problematic because creators often repeat the same description in cover icons. The Vitality Vet chose to use slightly different words than the usual phrase. The definition of the body is paired with fitness, while the description of the mind is paired with mental wellbeing. This is an excellent way to complement your report.

  1. The Wild Bride

Many of these examples use icons rather than text or photos. We prefer icons. It’s easier to keep things uniform. The Wild Bride is an excellent example of how photographs can be used to create a cohesive feeling. Although the photos aren’t all black and white, the husband-wife duo kept the color scheme neutral. All their photographs have the same minimalistic style.

  1. Anna Devis + Daniel Rueda

Last but not least, colors can be used as-is. No text, no icon, no photos. Only colors. For example, you could arrange your highlights to have a subtle flow between each cover icon. This is especially useful if you work in the wellness or health niche, where peace and tranquility are essential.

Three Tips to Create Custom Covers

Use contrast

We recommend placing icons on a solid background, such as Canva’s in the examples. Keeping the environment and hero in a good contrast is essential to make the icons visible. Color Hunt is a great tool that will help you find unique color combinations. You can also use Iconfinder’s online editor to color the icons if you have already identified the icon you wish to use. You can also change the color of a hero if you have used Canva’s elements.

Use icons instead of text

If you look at the many examples we shared, one thing is sure: icons are a standard feature on brand covers. You can only use the first letter in the cover’s title, but you are missing out on an opportunity to add more information. It’s better to choose something that complements the name of your body than something that repeats it.

However, icons can be used over text. You should ensure that the hero is connected to the actual content. You don’t want your followers to be bored or confused. If the highlight is a summary of frequently asked questions, an icon such as a question mark (light bulb), speech bubble, or person deep in thought can be used. It will be evident that the highlight addresses questions, even if you don’t use the term FAQ.

Be consistent

If there is one thing you can take away from this article, use your branding consistently to have some cohesion. Canva is a great tool that allows you to create a blank canvas. However, that doesn’t mean each cover has to be completely different.

Choosing a specific style such as a white icon with a solid background is better. It would help if you had a consistent manner, and the graphics you choose should be similar (e.g., white outline).

Wrapping up

It’s easier to attract the attention of your target audience with a customized Instagram Highlight cover. Design your highlight covers around your target audience’s main points of interest.

Although creating your covers is a fun way to experiment, it should not be at the expense of your branding. It can be instrumental in using templates. You’ll be able to know which shade and alignment you will use each time.
