Making New Year’s resolutions has always been a common practice. We always have good intentions, but we don’t always follow through with what we set out to do. It’s never a bad time to make a resolution to get the house in order, but a resolution to clean the house at the beginning of a new year is especially promising.
You’ll look better going to bed with an empty sink than kicking your toys around on the way to the bedroom. All the couch cushions are in their place, the coffee table isn’t tidy, the floor is clean enough for you to slip into slippers. And the smell of a freshly cleaned house.
A clean house not only makes you feel good, but it also makes you and your family feel good. A clean and hygienic room keeps infections and viruses at bay and gives you mental clarity so you can focus on what’s important.
Remember, you don’t clean because you have to. And it’s not a resolution. You clean for a reason.
That’s why we make the resolutions we make. New year, new house. But this time, do it to protect yourself and your family. Here are some tips to help you make cleaning your New Year’s resolution.
Clear the clutter.
Before you start cluttering your closet and bedroom with new items you’ve accumulated over the holidays, you should take a look at what you already own. You don’t have to be a complete minimalist but think about all the items you have in your home. What hasn’t been used in the last six months? What’s left to gather dust? Do you have toys that your children no longer play with or clothes that you no longer wear? All those useless items that accumulate in your apartment will have to be gotten rid of one day.
Note: “kindness” doesn’t have to stop in December. Thrift stores and recycling centers accept not only everyday items like clothes and toys but also used electrical appliances that have been wiped out in many homes. Decide if you really need what you have and offer it.
We take care of the little things.
Now that you’ve eliminated the unnecessary, you have a blank canvas to clean for your New Year’s resolutions. As with any big goal, it’s easier to achieve it by taking it one step at a time, day by day. So pick a few things you can do that will have a big impact. If you judge the cleanliness of your apartment by whether or not the sink is empty, washing dishes can be a daily goal. If you judge the cleanliness of your apartment by the smell, the first thing you should do is clean the tissues and empty the trash.
Tip: Set a goal each time and keep moving forward. If you set too many goals at once, it will be harder to stick to your plan.
Look at what you may have missed.
Even if you know that doing the dishes every day and vacuuming once a week is ideal, there are some tasks that you may not be doing often enough, intentionally or not. We dust the side tables but don’t do the cabinet shelves. We do the laundry but don’t do the curtains. Look around the rooms in your house and mentally take inventory of the places you don’t usually touch (or not at all). Tip: Don’t forget to disinfect all cleaning tools, wash brooms and brushes in hot soapy water, and clean vacuum hoses and filters.
Create a checklist.
You can start with a weekly list to make sure you have time to do each activity if your schedule allows. If you prefer a more detailed list, you can also create a list for each day of the week (or for five out of seven days if you want to take a weekend). You can be as vague or as detailed as you like, but choose what works best for you. However, you will feel a great sense of accomplishment when you have completed the tasks you have put off.
Tip: At the beginning of your New Year’s Eve cleanup, make a list of everything you need to do this month. Then break each task down into weekly tasks and finally into daily tasks. You’ll be an expert in no time!
Make it a habit.
Now comes the hard part. You have to stick with it. Set aside 15-20 minutes each day when you have a cleaning appointment. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is, the important thing is that you stick to a method that works for you. Do this for each individual task that you want to incorporate into your routine. Over time, your current task will become a routine and you can tackle the next one.
Tip: Studies have shown that it takes about 21 days to develop a habit. Focus on one task for three weeks before starting something new.
