Importance of Drinking Vitamin C for Children

It is essential for children to carry the necessary vitamins and nutrients needed for their proper growth and development. Vitamin C is the most recommended one for them to have as it is an antioxidant which has a goal of repairing and protecting the children’s health, and boost their immune system as well. It has the ability to keep their body cells healthy and protect them from infections. This vitamin can also strengthen a child’s blood vessels, which means minimizing bruising from falls and scrapes. Moreover, it can also help such wounds heal and keep infections at bay. Vitamin C definitely holds a lot of potential health benefits, even including consuming them when you are sick. It can serve as a soldier to battle the infections troubling the body. 

The human body cannot produce this vitamin itself, which is not stored in the body. Thus, this makes it the reason why consuming this vitamin and making your child get enough of this nutrient everyday is important. If they would not be drinking vitamin c supplements or syrup, at least try to include certain foods enriched with vitamin C in your child’s diet. These foods include fruits like oranges, kiwis, strawberries, and vegetables such as sprouts and broccoli. The amount of vitamin C which children are recommended to take would be 35mg a day for those aging from 1 to 8. For ages 9-18 on the other hand, it is suggested for them to take 40mg per day.

Water-Soluble Nutrient

However, vitamin C is being known as a water-soluble nutrient. This means that the amount of this nutrient that is not used in the body on a daily basis is being discharged. For this reason, this vitamin cannot be stored in the body and must be replenished regularly. Fortunately, this nutrient can be acquired through eating foods containing vitamin C, particularly brightly colored fruits and vegetables. You can have your child obtain the necessary nutrients by making them consume citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit, and their juices as well.

Vitamin C Supports Immune System Health

A child’s immune system is very important to take care of. It serves as a protection of the body to keep them from getting sick. For children, it is their inbuilt defense mechanism against unwanted bugs and germs, keeping them away from diseases. And to combat these germs and diseases, vitamin C consumption could be of help as a means to boost the immune system, supporting a healthy function and maintaining its health. It helps maintain immune responses, and even plays a role for managing the upper respiratory tract infections.

Vitamin C also holds the ability to reduce the duration of a common cold, relieving the severity of its symptoms. Thus, if consuming vitamin C in a regular manner, it can help fight off the symptoms and keep them from worsening. This will let children live normal and healthy lives, supporting their bodies’ developments in the long run.

Vitamin C is an Antioxidant

Vitamin C is known for its antioxidant properties, preventing them from damaging one’s healthy body cells. It reduces free radicals formed in the body. These are the compounds that are formed from normal body processes, as well as from exposure to potentially harmful substances like cigarette smoke, ultraviolet radiation, and air pollution. It has a high chance of causing  damage to cell membranes and other structures. Thus, antioxidants neutralize these radicals to help counteract the effects, keeping the child’s body from serious conditions.

Vitamin C Aids Healthy Bone Growth and Dental Health

Aside from supporting the immune system and being an antioxidant, one function of vitamin C plays in supporting the healthy growth and development of the child’s bones and teeth. This is vital for your child to function optimally over the years of body development. This will also make both their bones and teeth strong. The vitamin helps the body in producing collagen. Which is vital for the foundation that bone mineralization is built on.

You have to make sure that your child is consuming adequate amounts of vitamins as early as their toddler years. This will help them support their healthy bone building. This aspect may even be particularly relevant for young children who are experiencing rapid growth periods.

Vitamin C Maintains Nervous System Health

The nervous system is very essential to be taken care of, especially for children. It is their communication system that has the ability to help them walk, speak, swallow, and learn. With vitamin C, your child’s nervous system and its function will remain healthy, aiding them throughout their development.
